iOS 27's Siri Overhaul: Standalone App, Multi-Turn Chat, Deep Dynamic Island Integration

At WWDC26, Apple gave Apple Intelligence nearly 40 minutes of stage time. The biggest change this time wasn't any single feature — it was that Siri finally gained a standalone app form, with multi-turn conversation and deep Dynamic Island integration. The iPhone is turning from a device that runs apps into the entry point where Apple Intelligence orchestrates your personal digital life.

Siri AI: From Voice Assistant to Standalone App

Sixteen years after Apple acquired it, Siri finally has a standalone app form, with product logic that clearly moves toward the ChatGPT app.

Core changes:

  • Standalone app entry point: Siri is no longer a hidden voice assistant but a full app where you can see past conversations, continue topics, and start new ones
  • Multi-turn conversation: conversation history syncs privately via iCloud across iPhone, iPad, and Mac
  • Dynamic Island integration: swipe down from the top center of the screen and the Dynamic Island expands downward into a text input field supporting search, questions, and complex commands
  • Traditional entry points remain: you can still say Hey Siri or press the side button

Screen Awareness and Cross-App Tasks

The new Siri's core upgrades are "understanding what you're looking at" and "chaining multiple apps together for you."

Three typical scenarios:

  1. Chain search, reminders, music, and navigation: look up the World Cup schedule, then have Siri plan a watch party, generate a menu, and draft a group chat invite
  2. Screen awareness: recognize a place in a photo, combine it with an address a friend sent over, and plan the route automatically
  3. Cross-app actions: follow up on how to buy tickets for a show, set a ticket-lottery reminder, or play a singer's new single

Apple Intelligence Permeates Every System App

Siri AI is just the entry point — Apple Intelligence has already reached deep into iOS 27's system apps.

Safari

  • Automatically group open tabs by similar topic
  • Tell Safari in natural language what you care about (like product restocks or ticket releases) and get timely notifications
  • Generate browser extensions automatically from natural language

iMessage, Mail, and Calendar

  • Automatically understand context in messages and emails and suggest actions (like adding to calendar with one tap)
  • Recommend the right photos to send when relevant content comes up in a chat
  • Create and modify calendar events with natural language

Photos and Image Editing

  • A more powerful "Remove" feature that can erase more complex objects
  • New "Expand" (AI outpainting) and "Reconstruct" (changing the subject's angle) options
  • Image Playground gains richer styles, including a photorealistic one

Shortcuts

  • Describe what you need in natural language and the required steps assemble automatically
  • Later changes can be described in natural language too

Other Updates

  • Camera: Visual Intelligence is built into the camera — switch modes and Siri identifies what's in front of the lens
  • Phone: during calls with businesses, AI automatically surfaces relevant personal details
  • Home: AI automatically recognizes smart home activity, and camera footage supports natural language search

The Model Layer: A Google Partnership and an On-Device Upgrade

Apple is partnering deeply with Google, leveraging the technology behind the Gemini model family to jointly build the next generation of Apple Foundation Models. The models run in two classes:

  • On-device models: optimized for Apple Silicon, supporting speech generation, text and image understanding, and system-level dictation
  • Private Cloud Compute: larger models running server-side

The strongest on-device model is currently limited to a handful of devices like the iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro.

Restrictions and the China Market

The key things you need to know:

  • Rollout: developers can try the new Siri immediately; regular users get the Siri AI Beta later this year
  • Language support: English first, expanding to more languages fairly quickly
  • Regional restrictions: not offered at launch on iOS and iPadOS in the EU
  • Mainland China units: due to regulatory requirements, Siri AI and the other new Apple Intelligence features won't launch on mainland China devices for now
  • Device limits: the most advanced on-device model supports only newer devices like the iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro
  • Usage allowances: Image Playground and AI photo editing have daily limits, with higher allowances through iCloud+ subscriptions

Image Playground and the Photos AI editing features will have daily usage limits. Apple says users can get higher access allowances through most iCloud+ subscription plans.
