Barcodes have been around for more than 70 years — everywhere from supermarket shelves to courier packages — yet their design has never had much going for it aesthetically. BARKOD, a free tool, lets you turn barcodes into designed SVG artwork without compromising their scannability.
What Is BARKOD
BARKOD is a completely free online tool: no account registration needed, it works right in your browser. Its core feature converts an ordinary barcode into an SVG vector graphic carrying an artistic pattern, and the converted graphic can still be read normally by standard scanners.

Core Features
37 Graphic Templates
The left panel provides 37 graphic templates, from palm trees, vintage cars, and guitars to quirky shapes — hardcore and geeky in style.

Real-Time Preview and Export
Enter your numbers and pick a color scheme, and the right side generates the SVG vector graphic in real time. The design gets creative only in the upper half; the standard scanning zone at the bottom stays as-is to guarantee recognizability. The exported SVG stays sharp no matter how far you zoom in.
Three Mainstream Barcode Formats
| Format | Description | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| EAN-13 | The most common international standard, 13 digits | Supermarket retail goods |
| EAN-8 | A shortened version of EAN-13 | Small packages such as gum and lip balm |
| Code 128 | Encodes digits, letters, and symbols at the same time | Logistics waybills, internal factory management |
Usage Notes
The developer offers a few practical reminders:
- Print testing is mandatory: ink spread, package curvature, and scanner quality all affect recognition, so always print a test before finalizing the design
- The bottom guard zone must not be cropped: the scanning zone at the bottom of the graphic is the critical part for machine recognition; crop it and scanners cannot read it
- BARKOD does not provide GTIN codes: it only turns the numbers you enter into good-looking graphics; it does not sell official product barcodes
Who It's For
- Product packaging designers who want the barcode to blend into the overall visual design
- Brands that want their tone to show in the small details
- Independent developers or small brands that need fast results without spending money
