Entire CLI: The Open-Source Tool That Makes AI-Generated Code Traceable

Entire CLI: The Open-Source Tool That Makes AI-Generated Code Traceable

When you write code with Claude Code or Codex, have you ever had this experience: a week later you come back to a commit and can't remember at all why you wrote it that way? Git records what changed, but holds zero information about “why it changed.” Entire CLI exists to solve exactly this.

What Is Entire CLI

Entire CLI is an open-source command-line tool released by Entire, a company founded by former GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke. Its core feature is called Checkpoints: it stores the complete context of AI coding sessions (conversation history, prompts, files involved, token usage, tool calls, and more) in Git as part of the version data.

Put simply: every time you commit AI-generated code, it saves not only the code diff but also the reasoning process that produced the code.

How Entire CLI works

What Problem Does It Solve

Today's AI coding agents live in short-lived sessions: prompts survive in the terminal, and the reasoning process lives inside the context window. Close the session, and the decisions, constraints, and iterations that produced the code are gone.

This leads to several practical problems:

  • Hard code reviews: you can only see which lines changed, never why
  • Expensive handoffs: taking over someone else's AI-generated code means replaying every conversation to understand the context
  • Repeated mistakes: a new coding session has no idea which errors were already corrected and repeats them
  • Wasted tokens: every new session has to rebuild context from scratch

Core Features

When you commit agent-generated code, Checkpoints automatically captures the complete session record:

  • Conversation history and prompts
  • The list of files involved
  • Token usage statistics
  • Tool call records
  • Decision constraints and the reasoning process

This context data becomes part of a semantic reasoning layer that later sessions can refer to.

Checkpoints data structure

Installation and Usage

Installation takes just two commands:

curl -fsSL https://entire.io/install.sh | bash
entire enable

After you run entire enable, your conversations with agents are automatically recorded in structured form. No change to your existing workflow is required.

Supported Agents

Entire CLI currently supports:

  • Anthropic Claude Code
  • Google Gemini CLI
  • Concurrent multi-agent conversations

Entire promises to keep the platform “open, extensible, and independent,” supporting all agents and models.

Practical Use Cases

Code review: when reviewing, you see not just the code diff but also the intent and constraints behind it. Focus on the decision logic the model used while reasoning, not only the handful of changed lines.

Team handoffs: you can pick up code and keep working without replaying prompts or sessions. The context has already been saved along with the code.

Lower token consumption: coding agents no longer repeat errors that past sessions already corrected, because Checkpoints carries that correction history.

Multi-agent collaboration: a context graph lets multiple agents work in coordination. Different AI coding assistants can share working memory, avoiding duplicate reasoning and wasted tokens.

Multi-agent collaboration architecture

The Bigger Vision Behind It

Entire's goal goes beyond a CLI tool; it is building three core components:

  1. Git-compatible database: unify code, intent, constraints, and reasoning in a single version control system
  2. Universal semantic reasoning layer: enable multi-agent coordination through a context graph
  3. AI-native user interface: reinvent how agents and humans collaborate

Who It's For

  • Developers who use Claude Code or Codex heavily
  • Teams that need to manage AI-generated code
  • Tech leads who want more context in code reviews
  • Users running several AI coding agents at once
