6 Open-Source OpenClaw Skills in Action: A Deep-Dive Review of the GLM-5-Turbo Lobster Model

·Toolin Editorial Team

A hands-on test of Zhipu's GLM-5-Turbo, a model purpose-built for OpenClaw, with 6 open-source Skills fully covered: music, poster generation, infographics, Feishu automation, and more — stable tool calling at a cost far below Claude Opus.

6 Open-Source OpenClaw Skills in Action: A Deep-Dive Review of the GLM-5-Turbo Lobster Model

OpenClaw's (the lobster's) core competitive edge is Skills. But if the underlying model isn't smart enough, even the best Skill gets heavily discounted.

Zhipu recently launched GLM-5-Turbo, the world's first model optimized specifically for OpenClaw, along with the companion AutoClaw client. I ran it through the 6 open-source Skills I wrote over the past two weeks, and the performance was remarkably stable.

Every Skill below is free and open source — ready to use as-is.

Why Does the Model Matter?

Skills are the lobster's soul; the model is the lobster's skeleton.

I normally use Claude Opus/Sonnet 4.6 — no complaints except the price. But running Opus for every single task is honestly a bit extravagant.

GLM-5-Turbo makes four major optimizations for OpenClaw scenarios:

  • Tool calling: reaches for exactly the right tool and nails it in one shot
  • Instruction following: understands multi-step, complex instructions like “do A first, then B”
  • Scheduled and continuous tasks: supports scheduled execution; long-running tasks stay connected
  • High-throughput long chains: handles heavy data and multi-step tasks faster and more steadily

Skill 1: Smart Music Assistant

Built on a database of 5,947 music styles, the AI precisely matches a style from your description and recommends tracks.

What can it do?

  • “Some jazz”, “music for a rainy day”
  • “Play some Guns N' Roses songs”
  • Ask anytime: “tell me about the currently playing song”, “recommend bands with a similar style”

Installation:

npx qiaomu-music-player-spotify

Note: currently implemented via the Spotify API (NetEase Cloud Music has no open API yet).

Skill 2: Mondo-Style Poster Generation

Built on the Mondo style (the famous American limited-edition movie poster company), it generates images with Nanobana 2 — the results don't look AI-made.

Where it shines:

  • Movie poster design
  • Book covers (e.g., One Hundred Years of Solitude)
  • Official-account covers and Xiaohongshu images

Example command: “Generate Mondo-style posters for the IMDB Top 3 movies”

Skill 3: Infographic Generator

Turns any text or web page into magazine-quality HTML info cards, automatically screenshot and saved. Great for sharing to X (Twitter), WeChat, or Xiaohongshu.

Why not just generate images with AI? Because Nanobana image generation is a bit expensive. Generate a web page and screenshot it instead — any model does this well, at lower cost.

Skill 4: Feishu Automation

Feishu is one of the biggest winners of this OpenClaw wave — the Chinese IM best suited for hooking up OpenClaw.

Core features:

1. Create a task or calendar event in one sentence

Feishu calendar

Example: “Livestream at 36kr at 7 PM on Thursday — add a Feishu calendar event”

2. Create a professional book-list base in one sentence

Feishu book list

Paired with the epub download Skill, it can automatically organize a book list and upload ebook resources.

3. Generate Feishu documents

Example: “Tomorrow I'm livestreaming with Mr. Yao on WayToAGI to explain GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). Write a Feishu livestream plan; it starts at 8 PM.”

Skill 5 & 6: OpenCli, a God-Tier Tool

This is the most impressive Skill of the bunch. Developer Kabikabi (@jakevin7) built OpenCli, a tool that can turn any website into CLI mode.

How it works: It taps your browser's existing login state to pull page context directly for the AI to use.

Real-world examples:

Check Weibo's top 5 trending topics and write them into a Feishu document:

Even where Product Hunt has no CLI, the Skill will write one for you on the spot.

GLM-5-Turbo Test Results

Performance:

On Zhipu's published ZClawBench test, GLM-5-Turbo ranks just behind Claude Opus 4.6.

ZClawBench test

Hands-on experience:

Take the infographic generation Skill. It needs to:

  1. Call the scraping tool
  2. Understand the article's content
  3. Generate a polished page at the specified resolution
  4. Call Playwright MCP for a screenshot

Every step has to hit the right tool, and GLM-5-Turbo completed them all without a hitch.

Or take the OpenCli Skill: the model has to figure out which website it's dealing with, and where no CLI command exists, read the page DOM and write a script on its own — no small feat. GLM-5-Turbo handled that too.

Overall impressions:

  • The model is fast
  • Intent understanding is spot-on
  • Multi-step tasks never “misread the intent” or “stall midway”
  • Costs far less than Claude Opus

Pricing and Purchase

Zhipu has launched lobster Claw plans built on GLM-5-Turbo, in Personal and Team editions.

Toolin's Take

Who is it for?

  • Heavy OpenClaw users running lots of Skill tasks every day
  • Cost-sensitive developers who still need reliable tool calling
  • Users who want to try a Chinese model but worry it won't be capable enough

Core strengths:

  • Optimized specifically for OpenClaw scenarios, with stable tool calling
  • Long-chain tasks stay connected
  • Great value — far cheaper than Claude Opus

Limitations:

  • Still just behind Claude Opus 4.6; there may be a gap in extremely complex scenarios
  • Best experienced paired with the AutoClaw client

Summary: If you run as many Skill tasks as I do every day, using Claude for everything really is a bit extravagant. For everyday tasks, GLM-5-Turbo is more than worth the money — well worth a try.
