Hermes Agent: The AI Agent Framework That Grows Its Own Skills
Hermes Agent is an open-source AI Agent framework from Nous Research with over 180,000 GitHub stars, whose defining trait is self-evolution without manual coaching — now with a desktop app and support for 23 messaging platforms.
On OpenRouter's CLI Agent leaderboard, Hermes Agent sits firmly in first place with 4.91T tokens of usage, nearly four times the second-place OpenClaw. This open-source AI Agent framework from Nous Research has seen its GitHub stars surge from 27,000 two months ago to over 180,000, making it the fastest-growing open-source Agent framework around.
Its biggest difference from peers like OpenClaw: you don't have to teach it — it learns on its own.
What Is Hermes Agent
Hermes Agent is an open-source AI Agent framework from Nous Research (search NousResearch/hermes-agent on GitHub), launched on February 25, 2026. It isn't a chatbot — it's a digital assistant that keeps working for you in the background.

The Most Distinctive Part: Self-Evolution
Most agents on the market need you to write a long list of rules first to teach them the job. Hermes flips that around — as you use it, it distills what it has done into its own "cheat sheets," and the next time similar work comes up, it pulls them out and follows them.
Three core mechanisms work together:
1. Automatic cheat sheet generation After each completed task, Hermes automatically distills the experience and stores it as a reusable playbook.
2. Self-correction When it does a poor job, it revises its cheat sheets automatically based on your feedback.
3. An internal housekeeper Every few days it tidies up automatically: merging duplicates, archiving the useless, shelving what it can't handle.

What It Can Do for You
Real-world use cases include:
- Every morning, automatically pulling hundreds of AI-related discussions from X and sending you the ones worth reading
- Monitoring three competitor websites at once and notifying you on Telegram whenever a new feature appears
- Booking flights, tidying your inbox, running research, and writing weekly reports on its own
- Automatically keeping unfinished goals alive so nothing falls through the cracks
The v0.16.0 Update
From v0.7.0 to v0.16.0, Hermes has iterated through 9 minor versions, adding:
- A native desktop app (no longer a pure CLI tool)
- A browser-based management panel
- Simplified Chinese support
- 23 messaging platform integrations
- A multi-Agent dashboard where a team of Agents can work together
- A more complete safety model
The team named this release "The Surface Release," meaning "making it within reach wherever you are."
How It Differs from OpenClaw
- OpenClaw: like raising a pet — only after you teach it hands-on (writing soul.md) does it talk the way you expect
- Hermes: like hiring a self-teaching colleague — you just use it, and it grows its own skills
If you were on OpenClaw before, Hermes ships with a one-line command, claw migrate, to migrate the one you raised.

Tip: Where exactly are the boundaries of an Agent that rewrites itself? That's worth pondering before you use one. Start with simple, low-risk tasks and build trust step by step.
