Doubao Pro has launched in three tiers at 68 / 200 / 500 RMB, built around an Office Task Mode powered by Doubao 2.1 Pro. This piece breaks down the pricing, the quotas, and the value.

Doubao Pro Goes Paid: A Breakdown of the Three Tiers — and Whether They're Worth It

At Volcano Engine's FORCE conference on June 23, ByteDance formally opened a paid tier for Doubao — Doubao Pro. A massively popular product that had always been free started charging, and on June 24 three plans went live: Standard at 68 RMB, Plus at 200 RMB, and Premium at 500 RMB, with annual billing topping out at 5088 RMB, while the free tier stays. But price is only the surface. The real question is: what exactly does the extra money buy? This post takes apart the pricing, the quota differences, and the core feature behind it all — "Office Task Mode."

What the Paywall Really Sells: Quotas and Model Tiers

First, the bottom line: the three plans unlock essentially the same capabilities; the difference is mainly quota and model tier. What Doubao is selling isn't fancier chat but the call volume + tools behind productivity scenarios like software development, data analysis, professional design, and financial analysis — the chat box is just the foundation.

  • Standard plan = more than 5x the free tier's quota
  • Plus plan = 4x the Standard quota
  • Premium plan = 10x the Standard quota

The Three Tiers Side by Side

PlanMonthly price (auto-renewing)Relative quota
Standard68 RMB/month5x+ the free tier
Plus200 RMB/month4x Standard
Premium500 RMB/month10x Standard

Student discount: university students who pass identity verification get the Standard plan at a discounted 38 RMB/month for 6 months of continuous billing, plus more free quota. There is also a dedicated discount arrangement for visually impaired users on the video-call feature.

At 68 RMB, Standard costs about half of ChatGPT Plus (about $20/month, roughly 136 RMB); Premium at 500 RMB is only a third of ChatGPT Pro's $200/month (about 16,000 RMB annualized).

The Core: Office Task Mode + Doubao 2.1 Pro

The most important upgrade across the three plans is Office Task Mode and its companion flagship model, Doubao 2.1 Pro. The mode completed its full rollout last week.

  • Paying members: Office Task Mode runs on Doubao 2.1 Pro, with a higher quota
  • Free users: can also use Office Task Mode, but on the lower-tier Doubao 2.1 Turbo, with less quota

Office Task Mode hooks into the Doubao 2.1 models capable of executing agent tasks. With user authorization, it can:

  • Operate your local computer and browser: help use apps, the browser, and files — organizing material, sorting files, processing documents, filling in forms, and coordinating across apps
  • Invoke Skills: the first batch includes document, spreadsheet, PPT, creative design, browser operation, and visualization skills, and users can install their own (install the Luckin Coffee Skill, for example, and Doubao can complete an order following its guidance)
  • Generate deployable web apps: directly produce working online office systems with front end and back end — a customer-renewal and health dashboard, a data dashboard, an event registration system; access-permission management has shipped, and the backend database feature is in staged rollout
  • Built-in Office suite: online docs, spreadsheets, and PPT, with collaborative online editing and export
  • Scheduled tasks: have Doubao run work automatically at a set time or on a cycle, like compiling daily reports

How Good Is Doubao 2.1 Pro?

The confidence behind the paywall comes from 2.1 Pro's benchmark performance (official data):

  • Coding benchmarks: essentially on par with Claude Opus 4.7
  • SciCode scientific computing: 59.8, ahead of Opus 4.7 and GPT-5.5
  • NL2Repo repository-level code generation: 47, clearly ahead of GPT-5.5 and Gemini 3.1
  • MCP Atlas (agent capability, covering 36 real MCP Servers, 220 tools, and 1000+ tasks): ahead of Opus 4.7 and GPT-5.5

In other words, the premise behind Doubao's willingness to charge is that the model has already reached the threshold of the global first tier.

Against the Overseas Playbooks: Three Ways to Sell

High-priced AI subscriptions abroad come in roughly three flavors, and Doubao's approach this time is closest to the latter two:

  • ChatGPT Pro sells heavier compute: priority access to the strongest reasoning models and the Codex coding agent
  • Claude Max sells higher usage: Pro quota multiplied 5x and 20x
  • Google Gemini Ultra sells the ecosystem bundle: video generation, Deep Research, cloud storage, and an office suite packed into one subscription

Doubao's logic is that the extra money mainly buys call volume and a stronger model tier, with the working Office Task Mode as the core selling point. It's similar in spirit to Kimi Work, which launched not long ago — office-first rather than code-first like Codex / Claude Code.

Worth It? Depends How You Use It

  • If you're a free user: Office Task Mode still works, just on the Turbo model with a smaller quota. Try the free tier first, and consider paying only once you're sure your workflow holds up.
  • If you're a heavy agent / office-automation user: Standard at 68 RMB is the value sweet spot — benchmarked against ChatGPT Plus at half the price, with 5x the free tier's quota.
  • If you're a heavy development / data-analysis user: 2.1 Pro goes head-to-head with Opus 4.7 on code and agent benchmarks; Plus (200 RMB) or Premium (500 RMB) suits scenarios that need lots of calls.
  • If you're a student: the 38 RMB/month education discount is the best-value entry point of the three.

One background number: IDC data puts Doubao's monthly active users at 336 million. Even if only 1% of users subscribed to the Standard plan, monthly revenue would reach about 228 million RMB. The other side of the paywall: ByteDance is looking for a commercial path to cover Doubao's service costs, which run on the order of tens of millions of RMB per day.

The One-Line Takeaway

The essence of Doubao Pro's paywall is putting high-compute office and agent tasks behind it. The three tiers differ in quota, not capability — what's genuinely valuable is Office Task Mode powered by 2.1 Pro. If your workflow can be covered by "operate the computer + Skills + scheduled tasks + generated web apps," the 68 RMB Standard plan is among the best-value agent entry points in the Chinese lineup; if you only chat occasionally, the free tier is entirely enough.
