OpenSquilla Meta Skill: Packing an Entire Workflow into a Single Skill
OpenSquilla's new Meta Skill feature nests multiple sub-skills inside one skill, running long-horizon workflows end to end while cutting token costs by 60-80%.
OpenSquilla is an agent project climbing fast on GitHub (2,000+ stars already), the latest open-source agent to draw attention after OpenClaw and Hermes. Its biggest selling point is built-in "smart model routing": on the same tasks it saves 60-80% in token costs compared with the lobster.
Now it has shipped a new feature: Meta Skill. Put simply, it's a skill with multiple sub-skills nested inside, capable of running an entire long-horizon workflow end to end with no human intervention along the way.
What Is OpenSquilla
OpenSquilla is an open-source local AI agent positioned much like OpenClaw, but more aggressive on cost control. Through a smart model routing mechanism, it automatically picks the right model for each task based on complexity, instead of throwing the most expensive model at everything.
When a task finishes, an animation pops up showing how many tokens it saved you, and you can trace consumption at each stage.
What Is a Meta Skill
The core idea of the Meta Skill is "a skill of skills." One Meta Skill embeds multiple atomic skills; chained together they form an end-to-end super-workflow.
The pain point before: once a workflow was fixed, every step required invoking a skill separately from the chat box — full Human in the Loop — and just scrolling through the skill list was half the work. Meta Skill solves this: given the context, it figures out which stage you're at, calls the corresponding sub-skill, and delivers the result.
9 Ready-Made Meta Skills on GitHub
OpenSquilla ships 9 prepackaged Meta Skills on GitHub, ready to use. Take meta-kid-project-planner (a kids' project planner) as an example:
Input: a 9-year-old child wants to make a Meta Skill magic book, with one skill introduced per page.
Process: the Meta Skill automatically splits out a long list of subtasks and ran on its own for over 20 minutes with zero human intervention.
Final delivery: a complete 7-day project planning pack (roughly 3,000 words) that even accounts for the child's safety, with a safety review and contingency plans worked out.
How It Works
Looking at the source files, meta-kid-project-planner is assembled from 5 atomic skills:
- Kickoff: ask the user for preferences (age, timeline, budget, level of parental involvement)
- Feasibility triage: judge safety and whether an adult needs to help
- Execution: step-by-step plan -> materials list -> safety reminders -> parent learning goals -> final delivery
If outdoor activities are involved, it will even call web search to check the weather.
Hands-On Impressions
Strengths
- Saves money: smart model routing + task tiering cuts token costs 60-80% on comparable tasks
- Highly automated: Meta Skills run end to end without a human triggering each step
- Works out of the box: 9 preset Meta Skills cover project management, study planning, and more
- Extensible: build custom Meta Skills from your own industry experience
Limitations
- Creating custom Meta Skills has a high bar — you need deep understanding of your own business
- Preset skills target general scenarios; vertical industries require packaging your own
- The community ecosystem is still at an early stage
Who It's For
- Indie developers: want agents to automate daily workflows while keeping costs under control
- Content creators: have a fixed content production pipeline and need end-to-end agent execution
- Project managers: need complex SOPs broken down into automated flows
